Charity fundraiser night at Littleborough Cricket Club raised over £3,200

Date published: 17 May 2017

Cheques were presented to The Brainstrust and The Christie Hospital on Wednesday (17 May) at Hollingworth Lake after a charity fundraiser in April raised more than £3,200.

Organisers of the fundraiser, which took place at Littleborough Cricket Club, Leon and Sara Rushworth and Becky Kershaw presented Rita Pogson and Beryl Prendergast from The Christie and Michael White from The Brainstrust with the cheques for £1,000 each.

Speaking about the night, Becky said: “The whole night was a great success and was well supported. We are very fortunate to have great friends and family who helped sell tickets and also helped on the night. People were so generous.”

Becky came up with the idea for the fundraiser, as Leon, her friend and neighbour, was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in October 2016. He has since completed his course of radiotherapy and requires chemotherapy to keep the cancer at bay.

It was Leon’s idea to share the money equally between the charities, as a thank you for helping him fight the disease. The remainder will go to supporting him and his wife, Sara.

They hosted a night of musical entertainment, dancing and fun with a raffle and silent auction. Everything was donated, including the venue, advertising, balloons and bands with several local businesses donating raffle prizes. Leon himself added some sporting memorabilia to the silent auction, which also included Manchester City and United goodies.
