Smithy Bridge residents fear that lives could be put at risk if plans go ahead to replace the signal box at the level crossing with an automated system in October this year.
Network Rail has arranged a public meeting to give details about changes to the signal box. Under the plans, the existing signal box will be demolished and control transferred to an automated signal box at Castleton. They say the project will see the level crossing brought up to modern standards and will provide greater reliability but local councillors and residents disagree.
Councillor Ashley Dearnley, who represents Wardle and West Littleborough said "I would urge residents to attend this meeting to find out more information about the changes and raise any concerns they have."
Network Rail say the changes will provide a more reliable efficient and cost effective railway and that risk assessments have been made to make sure the system is safe.
The meeting takes place at Smithy Bridge Methodist Church on Saturday 6th April between 10.30 and 1. 30.
