State-of-the-art Middleton housing scheme opens its doors

Date published: 30 March 2024

An innovative housing project in Middleton that will provide affordable apartments for residents aged 55 and over has opened its doors.

The development, delivered by Rochdale Borough Council’s adult care service in partnership with The Riverside Group housing association, will enable a large number of people with care needs to live independently.

The scheme, located at Keswick Gardens, Langley, provides 88 high-quality one and two bedroom apartments, along with ten bungalows, for people aged 55 and over. Each room features stylish interior décor in line with dementia-friendly government criteria.

In addition to care staff on site 24 hours a day, there are a range of facilities, including a community café, gardens and hair salon that will all be open to the wider community.

Dozens of new full and part-time jobs, along with volunteering opportunities, have been created in housing and care, with recruitment from people living in the borough prioritised.

Councillor Neil Emmott, leader of the council, said: “I am really proud of this project, which is a huge boost for the Middleton community and underlines our commitment to invest in all parts of the borough. It builds on our many regeneration success stories over the 12 months. At the heart of the scheme is investment in housing opportunities, the creation of important new local jobs and the provision of modern, accessible accommodation for older and vulnerable people. This is exactly the kind of investment I want to see in our borough, showcasing our caring side at its very best.”

Councillor Iftikhar Ahmed, cabinet member for adult care, said: “Across adult care, providing state-of-the-art accommodation for our older and vulnerable residents is a key part of our vision. This is an outstanding project that will enhance the lives of our residents, reduce health inequalities and ensure people have the opportunity to live independently in a stylish, modern building with fantastic facilities, provided in a stylish, sensitive and accessible way.”
