Littleborough Rugby Club Reinforces Zero Abuse Policy Amid Rising Referee Incidents

Littleborough Rugby Club has issued a strong reminder of its Zero Abuse Policy following a sharp rise in referee abuse across Lancashire. According to Lancashire RFU, incidents of abuse directed at match officials have increased by 75% since the start of the current season compared with last year. While the issue has been particularly noticeable in junior rugby, similar behaviour has also been reported in adult fixtures.

Reports have highlighted that some coaches, parents, and spectators have directed verbal abuse at referees, with a minority even entering the field of play - a serious breach of match regulations and safety standards.

In response, the Lancashire RFU has introduced a new county-wide policy that all affiliated clubs must now follow. Littleborough Rugby Club has confirmed its full support for these measures and reasserted its own long-standing Zero Abuse Policy.

The club emphasised that the policy applies to everyone involved in the game — including players, referees, coaches, parents, members, and the general public. The expectation is clear: all individuals must show respect and refrain from any form of abuse, whether directed at officials or any other participant.

As part of the updated requirements, all teams at Littleborough Rugby Club will now operate with clearly marked technical areas for coaches and team staff. Spectators must remain behind designated barriers and are strictly prohibited from encroaching onto the playing area at any time.

A spokesperson for the club said the measures are essential to ensuring rugby remains a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for all:

“Together, we must protect our game, our referees, and our community. Abuse has no place in rugby, and we will continue to uphold the values that make this sport what it is.”

Littleborough Rugby Club urges all members of its community to support these standards and help foster a positive atmosphere both on and off the field.
