After an incredible 44 years serving the community, Littleborough councillor Ashley Dearnley is stepping down, bringing to a close one of the longest and most dedicated careers in local politics the area has seen.

Cllr Dearnley has represented residents in Wardle, Shore and West Littleborough for decades, earning continued support at the ballot box and becoming a familiar and trusted figure across the community.

One of the standout moments of his career came when he served as Mayor of Rochdale from 2005 to 2006, a role that recognised his commitment to public service and civic life across the borough.

Alongside this honour, he played a major leadership role within the council, serving as Leader of the Conservative Group for more than 20 years, before later taking on the role of Deputy Leader. His influence helped shape local decision-making over many years, particularly in areas such as regeneration and community development.

Beyond the council chamber, Cllr Dearnley’s contribution to Littleborough life has been equally significant. He has been deeply involved in a wide range of community organisations and events, including support for Littleborough Events & Association Forum and their much-loved events such as the Rushbearing Festival, Food & Drink Festival, and Christmas Lights which all play a key role in bringing the community together.

Cllr Dearnley has also been a steady presence during challenging times. During the devastating floods of 2015, he was among those working to support residents and help the community recover.

Colleagues and residents alike have paid tribute to his dedication, highlighting not just his years of service but his genuine care for the community he represented. His work across council committees, community groups, and voluntary organisations has left a lasting mark on Littleborough and the wider Rochdale borough.

As he retires, Cllr Dearnley leaves behind a legacy defined by commitment, leadership, and community spirit. His departure truly marks the end of an era for Littleborough.

LittleboroughLocal wishes him a long, happy, and well-earned retirement.
