Ernie Travis Takes On 140km Mega‑Run to Save Littleborough’s Historic Churches

Littleborough’s three Church of England parish churches, Holy Trinity, St Barnabas, and St James the Great,  have stood at the centre of community life for more than a century. They are where generations have celebrated weddings, welcomed new life, and found comfort in times of loss. Yet today, these treasured buildings face a stark reality: without increased local support, their future is uncertain.

In response, local engineer and well‑known community figure Ernie Travis is stepping forward with an extraordinary act of dedication. Across June and July 2026, he will run an astonishing 140 kilometres to raise vital funds to keep Littleborough’s churches open.

Ernie, known across the village for his work in aerial and telecommunications engineering, has long been a supporter of Littleborough’s heritage. His decision to take on this endurance feat comes at a time when many assume parish churches receive government or central Church of England funding, but they do not.

Instead, the responsibility for maintaining these historic buildings falls almost entirely on the community they serve. Rising costs for heating, repairs, and essential upkeep mean the churches now rely more than ever on voluntary giving.

Ernie’s 140km challenge is his way of ensuring these buildings, and the memories they hold, remain part of Littleborough’s future.

By backing Ernie’s summer-long effort, supporters will help:
  • Keep the Doors Open - Funding essential repairs, heating, and structural upkeep.
  • Protect Local Heritage - Ensuring these buildings remain available for baptisms, weddings, funerals, and community gatherings.
  • Support Future Generations - Preserving spaces that have shaped Littleborough’s identity for over 100 years.
Every donation, large or small, helps Ernie reach his goal and keeps these spiritual landmarks alive.
Throughout June and July, Ernie will share regular progress updates, allowing the whole village to follow his journey step by step.

Littleborough has always rallied around its own, and Ernie’s challenge is a powerful reminder of what community spirit can achieve. By supporting his 140km mega‑run, residents can help safeguard the churches that have shaped the village’s story for generations.

This summer, let’s stand with Ernie, stand with our churches, and stand with Littleborough.
