St Mary’s RC Primary School Implements New ‘No Dogs’ Policy
St Mary’s RC Primary School has announced a new policy banning all dogs from school premises, in a move aimed at safeguarding the wellbeing and safety of its pupils.
In a letter issued to parents and carers, Headteacher Mrs Ruane explained that although the school had previously allowed well-behaved dogs on-site, concerns around child safety and anxiety led to the decision. “Even well-behaved dogs can behave unpredictably when placed in a busy, noisy and crowded environment,” she stated, noting the potential risk especially for younger children.
Effective immediately, the updated health and safety policy prohibits all dogs on school grounds, regardless of whether they are on a lead or being carried. The only exception is for assistance dogs, which will still be permitted in line with existing guidance.
“We appreciate that some people may disagree with this decision,” Mrs Ruane wrote, “but I must ensure the safety of everyone on our school site.”
The school has urged parents to support the rule change by not bringing dogs to school during drop-off and pick-up times.
