May Warwick rest in peace
Warwick Smith, a respected local fundraiser and beloved member of the Littleborough community, passed away last week. He had been courageously battling a recurrence of throat cancer and was widely admired for his selfless dedication to making life better for others.
Warwick recently appeared on BBC Breakfast and North West Tonight, where he revealed he was living with throat cancer after being given a prognosis of six months in 2022.
In recent months his illness had returned, with the disease spreading to multiple areas of his body. Despite this, he remained determined to raise funds for cancer charities and continued to campaign and organise events.
Friends have paid tribute to Warwick’s courage, kindness and generosity. The Dyer’s Arms, where Warwick was a regular, posted on Facebook:
“It is with great sadness that we share the news of Warwick’s passing. He was a true gentleman who touched so many lives, giving selflessly to others while facing his own struggles with courage. His tireless fundraising will go on to save countless lives and bring hope to many. Warwick’s memory and legacy will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew him.”
A service to celebrate Warwick Smith’s life will be held at Rochdale Crematorium on Tuesday 23 September at 1:20pm. The cortege will leave from Holdens Funeral Home at 12:45pm. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend and pay their respects, with everyone welcome afterwards at The Dyers Arms. The family have asked for family flowers only, and suggested that donations be made to Springhill Hospice in lieu of other tributes.
Warwick Smith will be deeply missed for his warmth, resilience and the hope he inspired in so many. His legacy of fundraising and support for others will endure in the community he loved.
Warwick's fundraiser for Springhill Hospice is still live and accepting donations. https://www.justgiving.com/page/warwick-smith-2
