Rochdale Hornets Star Elijah Simpson Gets Buzzing with Boro Bees
Rochdale Hornets forward Elijah Simpson swapped his rugby kit for a Bee-suit this week as he lent a helping hand at Boro Bees, a buzzing community beekeeping initiative nestled in the hills of Littleborough.
The Boro Bees project, is an initiative started by Mark Harris a well known business owner of Littleborough based AAA Pest Control Services Ltd and partner Sharon Alfrey.
It's designed to connect the local community with nature, who invite residents of all ages to visit, relax, and learn about the vital role honey bees play in our environment. With sweeping views and a peaceful setting, it’s fast becoming a hidden gem for education and wellbeing in the area.
Simpson, from Australia, recently signed for Rochdale Hornets and scored a try and gained Man of the Match on his debut game. He took time out of his training schedule to visit the site, learn more about the bees, and meet with volunteers working to build a sustainable, educational hub.
“It’s such a peaceful place, and it’s amazing to see what’s being done here,” said Simpson. “I didn’t know much about beekeeping before today, but now I’ve got a whole new appreciation for the work that goes into it and how important bees are for the environment.”
The project plans to host open days featuring expert beekeepers and environmental specialists, offering hands-on experiences and talks for both children and adults. It's not just about the bees, though—it's about building community, promoting sustainability, and enjoying the outdoors.
Boro Bees also intends to sell surplus honey produced by their buzzing residents, with all profits donated to selected charities announced annually. It's a sweet initiative in every sense of the word, and community support continues to grow.
“Elijah’s visit has given us a real boost,” said Mark Harris. “He was genuinely interested, asked great questions, and really understood what we’re trying to build here. Having a local sports figure and club support us means a lot.”
With rugby and bees now both on his radar, Simpson joked he might have found a new off-season hobby. “It’s definitely different from tackling drills, but I’d love to come back and help again,” he said.
