Lane Foot Farm, home of Pastures New, for sale.
The much-loved horse rescue and rehabilitation centre Pastures New based at Lane Foot Farm, Ealees, has been placed on the market for £1.5 million, after more than two decades of providing sanctuary, retraining and care for retired and injured racehorses. The move comes as the farm’s owner has revealed they can no longer afford to run the facility.
Pastures New, a registered charity, has long operated from a small 25-acre farm on the outskirts of Littleborough. Over the years the charity has rehabilitated retired and injured racehorses, retrained them and re-homed many.
In addition to equine care, Pastures New has also offered an educational and therapeutic outreach: the “HORSE POWER” 12-week programme, part of their Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) initiative, aimed at helping young people facing mental health, behavioural or emotional challenges.
But now, in what the owner describes as “a real heartbreaker,” the farm is up for sale. In a message shared recently, she said:
“I simply can’t afford to stay in my beloved farm, but rest assured the horses and animals are coming with me! In fact they are the reason — as I’m exhausted trying to make ends meet here when there is so much equity in it … they are my life and more important than bricks and mortar (as much as I feel blessed to have been the caretaker of this very special place for nearly 20 years!) … it is equestrian heaven and I hope someone will love it as much as I have.”
At present, Pastures New continues its operations but the sale of the farm inevitably raises questions about the future. The priority, says the owner, is to ensure that all the animals are relocated safely: “the horses and animals are coming with me,” she emphasised.
