Over 300 Tyres Recovered from Hollingworth Lake
More than 300 tyres have been recovered from the bed of Hollingworth Lake in a major clean-up effort led by the Hollingworth Lake Country Park Rangers in partnership with United Utilities.
The large-scale recovery took place while the lake’s water level was at its lowest for many years, giving the team a rare opportunity to access and clear debris that had lain hidden beneath the surface.
In addition to the hundreds of tyres, other assorted waste materials were also removed from the lakebed, helping to restore the popular country park’s natural beauty and improve its environment for wildlife and visitors alike.
A spokesperson for Hollingworth Lake Country Park praised the effort, saying:
“Our Rangers have worked tirelessly with United Utilities to remove over 300 tyres and other debris from the lake bed. It’s been a great team effort and a positive step for the environment.”
The tyres will now be sent for recycling and repurposed into new materials such as carpet underlay, road surfacing, or even components for recreational projects like play areas, giving them a useful second life rather than contributing to pollution.
The clean-up has been widely welcomed by the local community, who frequent the lake for walking, sailing and nature watching. The operation highlights the ongoing commitment of both the Country Park team and United Utilities to maintaining and improving one of Rochdale’s most loved beauty spots.
