Littleborough Mum Raises Over £1,000 for Children’s Hospital Supporting Her Son
A Littleborough mum is going the extra mile - quite literally - to give back to the hospital caring for her young son after a challenging start to his life.
Steph Whittick’s nine-month-old son, Oscar, has been diagnosed with a rare condition called unicoronal craniosynostosis, where the bones on one side of the skull fuse too early. He is currently under the care of specialists at Alder Hey Children's Hospital and is expected to undergo major skull surgery when he is around 18 months old.
Oscar’s journey so far has been far from easy. Since birth, he has battled serious health challenges including sepsis, COVID-19, and epilepsy, alongside his craniosynostosis diagnosis. Despite everything, Steph says the care and support from Alder Hey has been “fantastic and so reassuring,” with more appointments ahead, including a consultation with a plastic surgeon.
Wanting to give something back, Steph has spent the whole of March fundraising for Alder Hey Children's Charity by taking on a demanding personal challenge - completing 100km through running, cycling, and walking.
Her efforts have already raised more than £1,000, and with just days left in March, Steph is hoping the community can help push that total even higher.
Speaking about her motivation, Steph said Oscar has been “on one hell of a journey” and that raising both funds and awareness is her way of saying thank you to the hospital that continues to support her family.
Residents who would like to support Steph’s fundraiser and help Alder Hey continue its vital work are encouraged to donate and share her story as the challenge reaches its final stretch.
