Littleborough resident to take part in 5k event for Autism Awareness
Christopher Rooney, a resident of Littleborough, is set to participate in the A World UK 5K this April, using the event to raise awareness and advocate for greater understanding of neurodiversity, particularly autism. Christopher, who himself is autistic, aims to highlight the challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals and contribute to a more inclusive society.
"Living with a disability presents many challenges, but as an autistic individual, I find it particularly stressful," he explained. "Many people don’t fully understand how seemingly small things such as changes in routine, sensory sensitivities, or social interactions can feel overwhelming for someone who is neurodivergent. What may appear insignificant to most can be a major hurdle for individuals like myself, impacting daily life in ways that are often unseen or misunderstood."
Christopher acknowledges the growing awareness of neurodiversity but stresses that significant work remains. "From personal experience, I know how difficult it can be to navigate environments that aren’t designed with neurodivergent needs in mind. Even something as simple as going to a busy public space can be incredibly stressful," he stated, highlighting the importance of support from his partner in navigating daily life.
Looking ahead, Christopher has set a key goal for 2025: to become an ambassador for neurodivergent individuals. To further his knowledge and ability to support others, he is currently pursuing a Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Autism.
"This qualification is an important step in deepening my knowledge, not only for my own personal growth but also to equip me with the tools needed to support and educate others," he said.
To demonstrate his commitment, he will be participating in The A World UK CIC 5K in April. This charity provides crucial support to autistic individuals and their families. "Taking part in this event is not only a personal achievement but also a chance to contribute to a cause that means so much to me," he added.
Christopher hopes that by sharing his personal journey, he can inspire empathy and foster greater understanding of neurodiversity. "I hope that by sharing my journey, I can inspire others whether they are neurodivergent themselves or simply looking to learn more to foster greater empathy, awareness, and inclusion. The path to change begins with understanding, and I am determined to be part of that change."
