Young people from Manchester Deaf Centre’s Youth Club and DAVE Project enjoyed an exciting day out at Hollingworth Lake last week, taking part in a fully accessible watersports session designed to build confidence, teamwork, and new skills.

The group visited Hollingworth Lake Activity Centre for a morning of boating and kayaking, supported by staff Sandro and Ben, along with BSL interpreter Craig, who ensured every participant could get the most out of the experience. The session offered many of the young people their first chance to try watersports in a safe and supportive environment.

Participants described the day as fun, challenging, and inspiring, with several already keen to return.

Some of their reflections included:

“I really enjoyed going on the boat, but the kayaking was challenging. I will come back again with strong muscles and learn more skills.”

“I enjoyed kayaking but it is difficult to manage. Good social atmosphere - I'd like to come back again.”

“I enjoyed kayaking, it was my favourite part. I liked the water and want to come back again.”

“I loved the day! I loved being on the boat and kayaking. It was a fun day!”

“I enjoyed learning about kayaking with two people, there was a great, calm atmosphere. I’d like to return in the future.”

The visit formed part of Manchester Deaf Centre’s ongoing commitment to providing enriching, confidence‑building activities for deaf and hard‑of‑hearing young people.

The DAVE Project supports young people aged 17–24 with opportunities such as paid work experience, workshops, and regular social trips.

The Youth Club, for ages 12–16, offers a mix of on‑site activities and outings including sports, theatre workshops, and ice‑skating - all designed to help young people meet friends, have fun, and learn new skills.

Both groups left Hollingworth Lake with big smiles, new experiences, and a shared enthusiasm for getting back out on the water.
